The 2 vertical black lines are parallel to each other and have started about 1 year ago. Now similar black lines are now emerging on my other finger nails. I have high cholesterol level but other than that I'm quite healthy and not taking any medication. If it indicates sickness, what is it?There are 2 vertical black lines on my thumb nail. Does it indicate sickness? What sickness?
It will be fun when you remember , at 2am, what it was that happened to your thumb. You hit or pinched or scraped the area just below the nail. That's the part the nail has to pass thru to grow. You did something to it and just squeezed it to make the pain go away. Then you got a black line.
If you are sick, you can squeeze the nail itself and when you release , the nail will stay white for a long time. If the red color returns, you are not dying and not diseased.

Splinter hemorraghes can be a sign of heart problems, but generally are a different thing all together. They are mostly caused by tiny voids in the nail plate cell production. They fill up with blood from the nail bed and appear as tiny black lines that look much like you have a splinter under your nail. Your nail plate will ride forward on the nail bed much like a train rides forward on its tracks. The rails are on the nail bed, and the grooves are on the underside of the nail plate. The voids are usually on the underside of the nail plate which allows them to fill with blood from the nail bed. They usualy are nothing to worry about unless there is a history of heart problems in your family. If so, then I would have a stress test perfromed if your doctor believes it to be warranted.
Maybe anemia, I dont know. I was thinking it might be because you hit it somewhere or something but that doesnt make sense if you have been experiencing it for a year.
You are growing a bar code. In another year you will be able to scan yourself out at the checkout register.
