what should we do at home? any ideas to dry it out so it falls off? or any ideas please, he keeps getting it cought on things around the house.and he is in pain.My dog ripped his toe nail it is hanging halfway off, not bleeding but he is in alot of pain?
It depends on how far back he broke his nail. In most cases, if it's just the tip and if it's not bleeding, you can simply take his nail clippers and clip the broken end off. If it bleeds, apply styptic powder or corn starch. If it's cracked lengthwise, if it's ripped pretty far back, or in this case, because he seems to be in pain, you might want a vet to take a look at it, just to be on the safe side.
Edit: Because it's down to the skin, if you have not yet done anything, it would be a good idea to take him to a vet. It's not an emergency, so don't worry about rushing somewhere tonight. Keep him calm overnight -- if you crate him, it might be a good idea to ';put him to bed'; early, if he just won't keep calm. You can gently wrap it, but only if he'll leave the wrap alone. Don't give him any OTC human pain medications if you have never received a dose from a veterinarian. He'll be okay, even if he acts like it's the end of the world. :)My dog ripped his toe nail it is hanging halfway off, not bleeding but he is in alot of pain?
Im sure he'll be fine. It happened to my BC once. Just watch it carefully.
i hate to sound like a broken rcord but vet is the best answer.
for now, i would put warm water on it, then maybe wrap his paw in something with like gause so it wont keep getting stuck. but then take him to the vet so it doesnt get infected.
im only 15, but if you had your toenail hanging off it would make it feel better with warm, NOT hot, not cold, water on it. wrap it up. and go to the doctors if you were in pain.
This JUST happened to one of my dogs about 2 weeks ago over the weekend. Took her to the vet on the following Monday. Your dog will need to be anesthetized and the nail will need to be cut off and the foot bandaged while it heals. Please take your dog to the vet. If you cut it off it will HURT LIKE HELL and it WILL bleed depending on how much is hanging off and how far down the nail it broke. If it's just a little bit of the tip of the nail you CAN trim it yourself and you might get some blood but you'll be okay. You could probably run down to your local pet store and pick up some ';quick stop'; or other blood stopping powder (sold near the nail clippers) to dip the toe into once you cut off the tip.
BUT if the nail broke farther down the nail shaft...as I said above it will be very painful. It could also get infected if you do it yourself when the nail is broken farther down the just the tip.
the only thing u can do is take him to the vet otherwise it will be able to get infected
You need to cut it...if you dont have nail clippers either get some or take him to the vet. I wouldnt say that it is an emergency-if you have a cage maybe you can put him in there until you can take him to the vet in the morning, or confine him someplace so he had limited space to much. Good luck!
The dog may be in some pain since the toe nail keeps getting it caught. If the dog is small or very gentle, try and cut it off. It will relieve the dog of some pain and have some flour nearby to put on the toe if it starts to bleed. I really dont think the vet is necessary either...
this answer might soung like its hurting the dog, but i dont think it is, ok first, calkl your vet and ask him what it do, if he dont answer, then i think cut it of and but something on it to stairalize it, hope this helped
ThE vEt!!!!
You need to get him to the vet to have the nail cut, this is indeed very painful for the dog and not a do it yourself job.
The site then needs to be bandaged so that it doe snot get infected.
Again, it is very painful for your dog - get him to the vet asap.
You should take your dog to the vet cause it could get infected and get worser.
Please take him to the vet, even the after hours one if needed. If your toe was hanging off wouldn't you go to the DR??
