Why does keeping soda with a nail in it, inside of a mason jar make the a rotten egg smell?

I am doing an experiment to see if soda can dissolve a nail, and I was wondering the chemistry behind what is going on inside of the mason jars, I am using multiple different soda's including pepsi, coke, mountain dew, and diet pepsi, each soda is giving off smells like rotten eggs, what could this be?Why does keeping soda with a nail in it, inside of a mason jar make the a rotten egg smell?
Hydrogen sulfide is usually what's associated with the ';rotten egg'; smell. It is common to have sulfur impurities in iron. The acid in the soda may be slowly leaching the sulfur our of the iron and forming hydrogen sulfide.

Do you have a ';control';? This would be a jar with with just soda in it. This would eliminate the reaction of the jar (or lid) with the soda. It's very unlikely that that is the cause, but it's always good to get as much data as possible.
